September 23rd - 25th 2016

Brian got off a weekend off and we figured it was the last weekend we would have to hit Yellowstone before it got too cold. We had to be back Sunday morning for the Primary Program so it was a quick trip but totally worth it.

Most of the campgrounds were closed so we camped at Colter Bay in Grand Teton NP again. When we started setting up our tent it started to rain like crazy so we left the kids in the car and set it up as fast as possible. We hung out in the tent for a little bit before putting the kids to bed. Breydon thought the flashlight was the coolest thing ever.

Nice and cold morning but it stopped raining so we were happy!

Pretty beautiful campsite!

Our first hike of the morning to go see a waterfall.

Family shot with the waterfall. Thank goodness for self timers.

Family selfie with Old Faithful. The exposure is horrible but Old Faithful was going off when we took the picture.

We finally braved the crowds to go see the Grand Prismatic Pool. We ended up parking on the side of the road and walking to it after waiting in the line to get into the parking lot for 10 minutes. There were crazy amounts of tour buses there but it was still worth going.

Pretty girl with the pretty colors!

Look Mommy I am in a cloud! After leaving the cloud her eyelashes froze which was pretty cool.

We bought some decent child sized binoculars for the trip. Breydon liked using them, not sure he could see anything though.

Look what we found! Mama bear and her three cubs were hanging out in this tree just off the side of the road.

As we were stopping to take Adleigh potty I saw a huge herd of bison cresting over the hill. I made Brian drive closer and we ended up getting caught right in the middle of the herd crossing the road down to go across a bridge. We were surrounded by bison for at least 20 minutes.

Why did the bison cross the road? To be lazy and cross on the bridge instead of go through the water. :-)

They crossed right in front of us.

And crossed right behind us. My kids were in animal heaven.

Then we drove over to Mammoth to go see if the elk were hanging out there, we were not disappointed.

Picture with the elk herd.

Brian was pretty excited to see the bull elk.

Adleigh wanted a picture with the baby elk but then wouldn't smile.

This is how close the elk were to us. That is our vehicle.

Next we saw two big horn sheep rams which was pretty exciting, it was a first for both of us in Yellowstone. Unfortunately my VR was turned off so most of my pictures of them were really blurry. :-(

We saw this herd right near our campsite. Guess we didn't need to drive all the way to Mammoth. Also the Aspen colors were AMAZING.

We roasted hot dogs fro dinner, a must do while camping.

Breydon loved the fire and would just walk around and around it.

Self timer!

How to keep Breydon away from the fire, selfies!

More selfies!

Getting their wiggles out before bed.

Good thing our sleeping bags are so big!

The next morning we saw a bull moose which was also a first for us! Sadly the lighting stunk and I couldn't get a good shot. This was from my iPhone, he actually got really close to us but my Nikon couldn't handle the low light.
Blarg!

Best shot with my Nikon. Need a low light zoom zoom lens but there are so expensive! So that was a bit of a downer but the rest of the trip was great!

  1. Yep, you definitely saw more wildlife in Yellowstone than we saw in Denali...
